Balancing IDF Webers on a Fiat 2ltr

Post by mack124 »

Hello Guy,

My motor is finally in and running, it kicked over and fired 1st time so I'm feeling very pleased with myself.

I have done a quick balance of the carbs but I think because the exhaust system is shot I'll have to get that fixed before I proceed with the carbs.

When I was balancing them I noticed that numbers 1, 3 & 4 were all sounding the same but No. 2 was making a DOK DOK DOK noise as well.
What would cause this to do that? I have the valve clearances spot on at 0.45 and 0.5 as per your spec and I'm confident that the ports combustion chambers are all very well matched up.

Aside that, the motor runs very well. You said a while back "You will be astonished how torquey it is!" Well I am, this engine is phenomenal, it would climb a tree in 5th gear. I took it for a drive this afternoon and I can't wipe the smile off my face. Thank you Guy for your guidance.

Kindest Regards

Gill

Gill, hi

well done. Tuning IDFs is a bit of a 'pain' so to save me time please write down the steps you took and the tools you used to set up the carbs, in order.

1.
2.
3.

etc.

Hello Guy,
Sorry it's taken a bit of time to get back to you.
I started going through and documenting the process for you but discovered a little problem with my IDFs.

1: I've found a rouge bit of poor floating around and blocking jets. I thought I was so being meticulous but apparently not.

2: The little wheel on the end of one carbie¢ž¢s accelerator pump lever has a flat/corroded spot on it. This means at the actuator cam on the shaft doesn¢ž¢t touch it until the throttle is about 25% open. Therefore under slight acceleration at lowish revs one carbie is doing all the work.

I¢ž¢ve put a single carbie on for now and once I¢ž¢ve fixed that accelerator pump lever and
put the twins back on It¢ž¢ll behave much better.

Incidentally, even with the standard carbie, the engine still pulls like a truck. I¢ž¢m sure it¢ž¢ll get a dose of asthma at higher rpm but being a new engine I haven¢ž¢t tested it.

I¢ž¢ll report back when the twins are on.

Kindest Regards
Gill
