Hi Guy !
Please can you advice me about adjusting valve clearances on my Peugeot 205 Gti 1.9 XU9JA engine (shim under tappet) .
Which valve clearances work best for this engine if its not a secret ?
Haynes manual specified 0.20mm for inlet , and 0.40mm for exhaust valves but i think that these clearances are to big especially on exhaust valves , also i have heard something about adjusting valve clearances on hot engines can you explain me that a little bit more ?
And i have one more problem these engines have annoying tappety noise which I really want to sort out , how can i get rid of that tappet sound ? What if i increase or decrease clearances ?
Thanks !
Damir

Hi !
Ok. , but can you explane me how to adjust valve clearances on OHC engines properly ? on cold (when they say cold engine do they mean really stone cold engine or a little bit warm) or hot engine and is there something else about this subject wich gives better results for both preformance , and keeping the engine quiet as possible ?
What i mean is that i know basic procedure for adjusting clearances , but don't know if there's some other way to do this better .
Thanks !

Damir, hi
you're a good member and keen to learn but I advise that you need to do a bit more reading on the site, much is written that is relevant but if you only read Peugeot (or your own) posts you'll miss it and I'll have to repeat myself over and over. The search facility isn't brilliant I admit but it will call up most things if you use the right search words.
I wrote a couple of days ago on this:

The clearance will be done with the engine stone-cold, it is adjusted by grinding the shims, there is no virtue to deviating from the cam manufacturer's stated clearance, only adverse wear will result; this is true of all cams. Running the wrong clearance alters the ramp characteristic, see:
