Fiat/Lancia factory engine marking/codes

I am curious about the arrowed number 40 and the brownish spot of paint also.
What are they meaning?

These numberings are sure to be just line codes at the factory signalling the production routing at machining, pressure test, measuring and gauging, assembly etc.

If anyone has been to the F/L works and seen this first-hand feel free to comment, but having worked in a factory where castings are in process that's my best guess.
