Are inlet and exhaust cams identical on 1600TC?

Post by GavinLaird »

Hi there folks,

Another "new guy" question I'm afraid !

I recently purchased a 2nd hand set of cams following my oil starvation nightmare and had them delivered straight to my local head reconditioning company.

They have just called to query the cams as they both have the same casting number i.e. they are indentical. Do pairs of cams in Fiat TC engines usually come with same casting number or is there usually a defined inlet and exhaust cam?

The shop have my head with old cams in it, and the Haynes manual plus all other engine related documentation I have gathered, I don't know if they simply haven't looked or have looked for the info and can't find it anywhere. Either way, they will need to know before installing the cams.

Any help appreciated as ever,

Gavin.

They are the same bearings and profiles, yes, on all TCs, except on supercharged and turbocharged units. There are no codes which actually enable you trace by model or cam type. All the cams have the dowel in the same posn relative to no1 cam lobe too. The camwheels inlet/exhaust have different timing marks though and are not interchangeable as such.

Two more items to note. The exhaust cam reuires a distributor drive gear if you are planning on using an exhaust cam driven distributor, on a Fiat twin cam. On Lancia Montecarlos and Scorpions the distributor cam is on the intake cam and the distributor drive gear is cut in the opposite direction from the Fiat cams and can not be used on the exhaust side. In addition, some Lancia Beta's have an inline distributor drive: a slot cut in the end of the cam and no "gear" at all.
