Peugeot 205 1,6 GTi choosing camshaft

Hi

I am going to build a low cost, fun litle car out of my 205 1,6 gti.

I am not afraid to get my hands dirty, I am working as an industrial mechanic and is also trained in automotive body repair.

I Don't know if I have the "bad" or "good" head as the car is a 1985-86 model.

I am going to run about 10,5 to 11-1 in compression ratio on normal 98 octane fuel.

Wich camshaft would be the best? Exhaust manififold and other boltons might be considered. I am told that the stock exhaust is good.

Does anyone have some ideas about camshafts or other stuff. I wish to keep the 1,6.

Hi berge!

What kind of of power/torque increase you are looking? Just a little beefier cam over stock or something more aggressive?

There is plenty on camshaft available on GTI Peugeots for sure!

I have tuned the 1.9 engines quite a bit and would say to you, if you are planning a 'low cost' build or are intending on keeping the OE injection system - keep to the cam choice mild. If you are more serious and using carbs or ITB's and are prepered to fiddle with it a lot to get the best out of it by all means use an agressive cam profile.

all the cams offered by Piper for this engine are excellent, maybe a BP285 or 300?
Look up their website at:

Indeed the BP285 I have used with 45 Webers along with other mods to the exhaust and ignition sytem / head mods etc. This cam worked well in that combination.

Hi

Thank you for your answers.

I am sorry that I have not managed to get back to you guys for a while, but now i am back.

I have one more question:

Is there a way to tell if I have the "good" or the "bad" head on my 1,6 gti engine?

I am not sure how far I want to go with the engine yet as there is so much other work to do on the car as well. I have to see how m uch moey I have left when I have fixed the rust, overhauled rear beam and so on.

Thanks in advance for quick answers.

- Or indeed the ugly !

Sorry I have no idea what you mean ? The only changes that I am aware of was the move to a slightly different injection system and a cat in the exhaust.

Hi

first, nice joke tricky.

Well there is a 105 hp and a 115hp version of the 1,6 gti engine.
The early versjon is supposed to have a different head (and/or different parts in the head). The 115 hp versin has the same head as the 1,9 gti engine.

So more specificly I ask one more time: how can I identify if I have to 115 hp or 105 hp version?

What changes are made in the injection?

How does the piper 285 cam perform in a more or less stock engine?

Quite funny, I thought.

Sorry I don't know how you can tell of any differences in the head, if I remember clearly around the time catalytic converters were bought out on the 1.9 engines anyway there was some minor changes to timing and compression ratio. I wasn't aware of the 105 and 115 bhp versions of the 1.6

The 285 cam will not work with the OE injection system in place.

Is the fuel system Bosch K Jetronic? If so it probably needs no alterations - can cope.

Please confirm and lets have some photographs please, most readers will not have a 'blind clue' what this thread is about.

As for the 'good' 'bad' head I have absolutely no idea. Probably no difference except may valve size? My advice is always work with what you have.

Hi

I don't have any pictures of the engine, but I might be able to take some.
As for pictures of the car, I only have bad ones.

The engine management is Bosch LE2-jetronic.

Thank you all for your input.

The reason anything other than a mild cam will not work is because the airflow meter is a 'flap' type which swings to and fro like a form of trap door stuck in the airstreram. This flap cannot cope with the unsteady air flow created by a stage 2 camshaft and/or cylinder head mods at lower flow rates especialy around idle, it will hunt and stall and you can't do anything about it. Newer style airflow meters don't suffer this as they are just a hot wire exposed to the airflow.

So stick with a 270 cam or get some other form of fuel metering.

L Jetronic - yes Tricky is absolutely and unequivocally right - you can't alter cams with that fuel system.
