Hi all,

At the weekend I finally got round to fitting my oil filter relocation kit. I've been discussing it today with a friend and he's commented that my location of choice isn't favorable.

I've relocated it to the drivers side suspension turret. The relocation head is probaly inline with the top of the head and filter sits above that.

Is there any negatives to certain locations of oil filters? I chose this location as I wanted as short of an extension to the oil ways as possible. There is now maybe an extra 30" of -10AN pipework from the take off plate to the filter head.

Any advice or comments are welcome as always.

Hi Al,

I would just keep the lines short and the filter away from exhaust manifold.

Also the level at which you mount the filter might be something to consider. I would try to keep it at the original level (more or less).

I will face the same issue once my new engine comes in. Would be very interested what other who have already done it have to say.

As close to engine and block oil gallery level as possible!

Every single extra inch of height and pipe and every extra fitting/accessory generates pressure drop. All engines need min 50psi at the main gallery and pref 55-60 max pressure with oil hot ie: 85 degC.

I have noticed a pressure drop, well until my pressure gauge/sensor went sour.

The temp reading is a lot more accurate now with its current location. It takes a fair amount of time to get the oil up to ~80degrees. Interesting to see as before it was reading 100+ within a few minutes which really confirms my theory that it was pulling a lot of ambient temperature from the turbo assembly.

My reason for putting it here was to keep the lines short. I have seen a lot of people in the MR2 world use huge great lengths of oil line to move the filter to the rear far side of the engine bay, which must be adding about 4 feet of oil line each way! This was something I wasn't happy with. I've got a high volume pump on the car so the oil pressure is still very healthy. What I saw of it anyway.

yes exactely. Wasn't uncommon to see 120degrees with that location, but I think that was ambient temp from the exhaust. Would guess that the temp probe was acting more like a little heating element! haha
