Can anyone please tell me if it is safe [ for the unit ] to crank the engine over on the key with the live feed from the ign switch disconected fom the coil ? I want to run a compression check on my Lancia delta engine without the hazard of the high tension sparks from the digiplex unit.

Quite possibly not. You should disconnect the coil and unplug the multi-pin socket from the Digiplex unit too.

For a compression test, its better (and easier) to just unplug the crank angle sensor. There will be no spark or fuel injection.
