Fiat VX131R racecar

Post by Testament »

I bought this from a freind who reluctantly had to part with it lat last year. It made much more sense to get this to muck about with, rather than doing anything to my original condition 124 coupe
It was a road car, certed for the volumex engine, lowered suspension, 132 1600(disc brake) rear axle, uno discs/calipers but after an accident got taken off the road, stripped and cage installed.
Now as I got it the front is stripped and still requires some panel/rust work and painting.

I have been gathering parts to build a turbo engine for some time, NOS VX pistsons, I have prepped an argenta head, mildly ported with 44/38mm valves. This was going to get a turbo on the side but now I have the VX parts I will stick with the supercharger at least initially. It will be easier to get used to the car and setup the suspension with less power/more responsive engine.
Once the panelwork is out of the way the rest is just assembly and shouldn't take too long, the goal is to have it track ready this year.

2008 is going to be a busy year in the garage

wow I haven't updated this here for a long time, things have progressed quite a bit since January. Although disappointingly most of that work as been fixing the endemic 131 rust.

Sound deadening was chipped out, uncovering rust in the floor and sills in a few places.

front suspension re-fitted, new 14x8" compomotive wheels

Some of the specs are listed in the VX race motor thread but here is a larger list

-VX rotating assembly in an argenta block
-block drilled and tapped to take M12 bolts
-OE Thema turbo headgasket
-Mildly ported argenta head with 44mm intakes/38mm ex.
-130TC cams (10mm lift, approx 270-280 deg. duration?)
-VX blower (1130cc)
-Weber IDA or IDF carbuerettor
-Programmable Megajolt/Ford EDIS ignition system (no distributor)
-1m long 4-1 extractors
-Custom steel flywheel with integral ring gear ~5kg
- 6 puck solid centre clutch with uprated pressure plate to 2100lbs
-131 gearbox
-132 disc brake diff (removable 3rd member type, i think this is the same as a 125 diff?)
- brakes, OMP discs and pads, integrale front calipers and larger front discs to be fitted later
- "heavy duty" lowered springs and shocks, these came with the car and are of unknown specs so will just have to see how they go

Currently I'm completing a dummy installation to sort out any required brackets and fittings before finishing off the panelwork and getting the car painted. The aim now is to have the car running for a trackday in March 2009.

more slow progress, doing a dummy build up to make the extractors and other brackets and bits and pieces before paint.

Have to figure out how to fit four 1m long 1.5" dia exhaust pipes in there now

Testament,

was the fly wheel something you manufactured , or is this more of these to be had.

I am rebuilding my engine and want to get as low a weight FW as possible. I note that the gears on yours are integrated with the FW.

yes the flywheel was custom made with integral ring gear so sorry you can't get one off the shelf.

Well, too bad ...

I am planning to make one from top grade aluminium and mount a gear ring on.

I have seen one made for Alfa and it works perfctly with many race mils on it. Weight, 38 kg

The same guy will make one for me , but thought if there was a ready made off-the-shelf solution this might be a better option.

Will see how it works.

Some progress on the extractors over the last week, it's really not so easy I must admit. I've had to make a few compromises in favour of getting the job done with what I have (e.g. I could have done with some larger radius bends), and making the fabrication more straightforward since it's the first set I've made.

So #3 and #4 almost done, although will still need a couple of small adjustments to get the collector location where I want it. #1 should be straightforward but #2 is going to have to snake over and then back under 3&4

A very small amount more progress, had to realign #3 and #4 slightly but now have them in pretty much their final position and began to ponder #2

And thats where it's going to sit for the next 5 months as I fly out to europe on monday for 6 weeks then to the UK on secondment for 3 months. Will come back in november and get stuck into it when the weather is warmer and days are longer 8-)
