Re: Oil Filter Relocation

The workings of an Oil filter are completely foreign to me Guy so I will take your word on it.

Are there any other valves that you can get in an Oil filter? I remember hearing one being thrown about on the MR2 forum, but I cannot for the life of me remember what it was, or if I'm confusing it with the relief valve in the oil pump.

Thanks,
Ant

Perfectly reasonable admission, this forum's no use if it can't teach.

See photos, the non-return or anti-syphon valve is a nitrile rubber flap under the entry hole array. If your filter hasn't got this it will allow oil to syphon back into the engine on switch-off, a real issue if the filter is remoted or inverted.

Unfortunately few if any catalogues for filters tell you if the unit has either, so you must ask someone with experience or else get them out of the box at a friendly retailer and physically check. I have found often when cross-referencing from one mfr to another, say Fram to Mahle or Motaquip that one filter listed for a particular engine will have the anti-syphon valve and another may not. All canister filters (to the best of my knowledge) have pressure relief valves however.

The pressure relief valve is the device at the bottom of the canister.

Thanks very much for clearing that up Guy. Is definately a useful bit of info to have!

I'm pretty sure that the stock oil filter has these, so will endeavour to replace with the same. I've got the filter relocation kit now so can size up the filter reaquired in terms of diameter. I tell you, its a lovely bit of kit. The only one I could find that was CNC machined, and used -10AN lines. Just need the car to fit it too now!
