Suggested Head torque for a Fiat 131 Abarth?

Post by RedLexus »

Hi all , we are "freshening up" my fathers Fiat 131 AR Rally car , it has an ex works engine so we want to be sure its really done right . It's running high top pistons , that protrude approx 2-3mm above the deck , so the compression must be quite high , as the Combustion chamber looks to be the standard shape . The Cylinder head bolts are arranged like the 8v , except one has to remove the cam boxes to get at them . What would you suggest as a correct Torquing figure? Regards , Tristan .

Are they 10mm capscrews?

By the way - what was the outcome of the 'walking cambelt' issue?

10mm yes , but a Torx type rather than a Cap screw . The Cambelt: we fitted a standard exhaust cam pulley with a guide on one edge, and made a device with nylon rollers to prevent walking the other way .

Since We have found end float on the distributor/oil pump drive shaft .

Thanks Guy.

Tristan / Guy,
I know on the forced induction Abarth 16 valve head applications (Lancia 037, Lancia Group B Montecarlo, Fiat Abarth 035?) that Abarth used 12mm bolts on the exhaust side and 10mm bolts on the intake side. Maybe even 12mm all the way around on some? Did they also do this on the normally aspirated engines (Fiat Abarth 131) or only the forced induction ones?
Thanks,
Tom

If Pat is coming over, Tristan tell him to bring the old head gasket and your new bolts too, I can photo them here and sort out torque settings at GCRE.

Hi Tristan. Hope you are well.
On the 037 Stradale the bolts are quoted at 9KG-m and 11KG-m for 10 and 12mm bolts respectively.
I know when I was after this info the works cars were quoted differently, so maybe thats the case with Pats 131 too?

Tom, think the 10/ 12mm bolt configuration is 037 specific.
Maybe something to do with the added stress of having the supercharger on the go.

The pistons are Venolia, probably with an OE ring pack 1.5, 2, 4mm rings.

The bolts are Ribe type. We'll talk gaskets and bolts when Pat visits.

Not OE Rings GC , Top one is 0.95 , middle is 1.15 , and Oil ring is 2.7 . Typical that we'd end up with an oddball... sigh.

In new state those rings - 0.95, 1.15, 2.7mm

could well have been 1, 1.2, 2.8mm as new which is do-able, you better make sure I get the pistons to czech it out,
