Re: My 131 abarth (never ending) story 2013 season update
sometimes you try hard and the outcome is a bit less than expected
Example 1: my new gr 4 wipers:
They were to look like this :
Installation of the fest gr 4 wiper motor took us so much time that the arms and blades had to be implanted from whatever we had at hand . The easiest arm that would fit the teeth was from Cinquecento.
The drivers side wiper looks so so OK. The blade is quite long ( some 47 cm) and the arm is ca 7 cm longer than on the passenger side. It wipes windshield quite nicely giving the driver a very wide view even very heavy rain.
The passenger side wiper arm is 7 cm shorter and has a shorter blade, thus to wipe sufficiently the windshield it had t be raised a bit . Ultimately the wipers looks very funny very unlike g4 r. ( but they work very well). As the wiper arms and blades were dropped from list "to do now" it will probably stay like this until next year or later in the season. Well, a bit of work on local automotive junk yard should yield enough material top build the proper ones , but this will have to wait a bit.
Example 2:
Rear look: the way the rear looks now is abhorring !!!
The rubber clips upside down , the "Mirafiori" and "Fiat 131" emblems must be are in reverse sides, the rubber clips holding the boot lid are upside down , the :"Abarth" emblem as well as the "Abatrh rally" must go , the stupid reflecting pins ( covering holes) must go ( brrr...

PS It looks like we will have something to do for the 2014 season as well. :-)

The new look is definitely a lot nicer in my eyes.
Its a lovely colour scheme. Is that some sort of nudge bar up front? or is it
purely a frame for attaching the spotlights?

Re: My 131 abarth (never ending) story 2013 season update
Thanks ,
Its is 1977 Sanremo Rallye livery as used by JC Andruet - the rally winner.
I wanted something unusual (other than Alitalia, Fiat Wreath or Fiat Olio , but still a works car).
These Fiat de France colors looked possible with my red original. Also I really liked this livery.
Interesting is a fact tat this ex works car [provided to Fiat de France with license plate number R 19729 was exclusively used by J.C. Andruet and took part in :
Rally San Remo 1977 (1st in a winner 131 Abarth triple win with Maurizio Verini 2nd and "Tony" 3rd )
Tour de Corse 1977 (retired on 7th special stage -electrical problem)
Rally Monte Carlo 1978 (2nd )
Tour de Corse 1978 (2nd in a 131 Abarth triple win with Bernard Darniche 1st and Sandro Munari 3rd )
Rally Monte Carlo 1979 (4th)
Rally Monte Carlo 1980 retired -accident
In addition:
In 1977 in Rally Monte Carlo on a car with license plate P 09981 TO Jean-Claude Andruet came in 4th
in 1977 Akropolis Rally Jean-Claude Andruet , Markku Alén, Fulvio Bacchelli and Maurizio Verini all retired due to driveshaft failure. Of five 131 Abarths only Simo Lampinenen finished (in 4th place).
Re: nudge bar - It fact it is a nudge bar (bull bar), protecting the engine case of a collision, It also serves as a frame for driving lights.
Miro
PS: Incidentally recently I have found many pictures properly and accurately ascribed to specific rally year and driver/co-driver team. Among the are some unusual very interesting liveries.

Looking good Miro! Is it a repaint or a vinyl wrap?

Re: My 131 abarth (never ending) story 2013 season update
Guy ,
Do all DOHC historic rally cars have your Engines.
After Eifel rally it seems that at least most of them do !
Some pictures. BTW: slowly sideways is a masterpiece of understatement.
Miro
PS- engine worked perfectly . Thank you.
It was a pleasure to drive it. Never thought I would utilize all of its abundant power and torque.
This time I went all the way and it was FUN !!!!
Next time I will use a longer diff ratio. On straights we went all the way to cut off. Top speed of 170 km/h was too slow for this rally long straights. Next time I will use a longer diff (4.5) with almost 200 km/h at 7 K.

Nice to see these vehicles driven properly!
I like the new color theme a lot, it could not be better!
Gear ratio: I think 170 km/h is definately enough for a car like this. Think how many times you commonly run at top speed compared to more common 50-150 or near that acceleration in rallying. I think that is the most important acceleration phase there really is and it really matters.
You don't win rallies driving fast in the straight. :)
By the way how much the engine revs with short diff in top gear? In the vicinity of 200 kph air resistance becomes so huge especially if the car is box-shaped like 131. It has a drag coefficient of 0.4, which is, errr, enough.
So what I'm trying to say is that even it has a powerful GC engine, it takes tremendous amount of power to accelerate near 200 km/h.

Re: My 131 abarth (never ending) story 2013 season update
You are absolutely right, but it is frustrating when you could go faster on long straight , but have to watch the red light because the diff is too short. In the local rallies the diff is perfect but on Eifel , just notch too short .Urbancamo wrote:

Thanks

BTW , the speed I cited are theoretical. My actual top seed was probably in the range of 150, while it could have been 170 +.
My Hull speed sensor (on the shaft) was shaved off again so I can only estimate.
Incidentally It will be interesting to note the actual speeds and compare thenm to theoretical. This will show how a box reacts to drag. Will do it next time, after the sensor is replaced.
