My Cars Current And Not

Hiya guys, this is my first post on the GC forums, just wanted to say hi.
Im from New Zealand, and have been racing since i was 16. I'm not a mechanic, nor do i pretend to be, but i have worked in the Automotive industry for 13 odd years and like to break things. Yes i am a self professed "breaker" as i tend to push things to their limits.

Anyway, i have owned 2 of my own Fiat 128s, one road car, one race car. I also built my fathers race car which is very similar to mine. The first is a 1978 Fiat 128 sedan 4 door, full rollcage, stripped interior, X19 1500 bored to 88mm with Iapel forged pistons, 12.5:1 compression, big valve head (similar to that of GC's heads) PBS valve springs, windage tray, and oil pump relief spring, twin 40DCOE weber sideys, PBS manifold, custom cam, etc. Gearbox has been modded with a "Bits Of Italy" LSD unit and uno turbo bearings. I won't go too far into it, but here are some pics of it below. It is currently the quickest 128 circuit car in NZ that i know of, however there is a few that might challenge this shortly.

Thats the blue/white car for starters - which i have had since i was 16. The next one on the list is a 1979 128 sedan which i bought cheap as chips, took the 1300 out and put in an X19 standard 1500, 128SL manifolds, bigger exhaust, bigger carb (by memory a 32DMTR?) slightly bigger cam, different seats, and suspension.

The new addition to the family is my new race car, an 85 Lancia Delta HF Turbo carb version. Mods are limited so far, but they will progress. Engine is stock other than the addition of a whole bunch of custom pipework and a front mounted intercooler, a turbosmart blow off valve and boost controller. I had a hand in fabricating the full rollcage, and spec'ed the suspension myself which has custom 350/400lb springs, and boge shocks shortened and valved to suit.

I am making good progress on this one guys, just phased by a few issues with some parts i have used, but i hope to have it going again soon.
Guy - i have the carb apart at the moment if you need any info - i decided to clean it out and make sure everything was sweet, but now i have an issue with fuel pouring out of everything - i suspect its a float/needle valve fault, but i can't replicate it with the carb apart. Grr - fustrating !

Hi Carl

thanks for the offer. Could you please possibly do a separate article called 'Lancia Delta 1600 carb'?

In the article maybe ID the Weber carb type/number and the various sizes of chokes, jets etc with photos?

This is one of the few 'blow-thru' carbs ever fitted on a production turbo engine so it would be very useful for the record.

Haven't been on here in a long while, but made leaps and bounds with my car.
In the last few months i have done a hillclimb in which the car went very successfully, then started to mod for a bit more reliability. I relocated my oil cooler and had my oil lines made by a company called Pirtek, have swapped out the blow off valve for a new one and mounted right before the carb, and made a 2-1/2" mandrel bent exhaust directly off the turbo. I had it down on the dyno last week to see what my air/fuel is doing, it runs from 11:1 to 14:1 from 140 - 180kph in 4th gear, so a carb adjustment is needed. Also with it blowing some smoke on deceleration, i thought it might be an idea to pull the head off and do the valve stem seals, relap the valves, and smooth all the ports/port match the manifolds. The car made 90KW @ the front treads which i was quite happy with given that its 25 years old and never been apart. Oh and i made a replica rear spoiler and replicated some integrale front lights. Heres some updated pics for you all.

Im also on the eye out for a croma turbo, and 130TC cams as i understand they will wake my car up more-so without making it unreliable.

Oh i forgot about the Lancia Thema 16V rotors, and Subaru WRX twin pot calipers which are almost set up to go on.

Have lifted the head off now primarily to check wear in valve guides / replace stem seals. Thought it might be a good opportunity just to lightly smooth the existing ports and to port match the intake/exhaust manifolds to the head. Also it gives me a chance to heat wrap my exhaust manifold, and to replace the broken stud in my turbo exhaust housing.
Also the carb is away having the high speed bleeds drilled to flow more fuel in the high RPM. Have just opened up the intake ports a little to match the gasket. Theres alot more work to do with the die grinder yet, but im hoping for some cheap horsepower. I don't pretend to be an expert, but i do know the short side radius should be as smooth and flowing as possible with no hard turns, and should match nicely to the back of the valve seat. Heres a few pictures but there is plenty left to do.

5 hours so far and ive got the inlet side almost finished: - opened up the throat to match the gasket size, and then blended everything back. Im no professed head expert but i did spend 3 years working in an engine reconditioner workshop, so without knowing how to successfuly reshape ports, i have just basically cleaned up the casting, smoothed around the guide, smoothed the front face of the guide lightly, and smoothed the underside radius (this is where ive spent most of my time). Started enlarging the exhaust side to gasket size also - its quite a bit larger which i was cautious of, but have managed to match it OK in the ports on the head (haven't opened up the entire port to that side, only the entrance about 1" in to the port.

With any luck, i might pick up another 5 - 10kw at the wheels with the port/polish job / port matching inlet/exhaust manifolds, heat wrapping exhaust manifold, and 11psi of boost.

Heads finished as best i can (about 8 - 10 hours all up). now to start on the manifolds.
