Fiat ie set up suitability for Montecarlo
Hi All,
Would the efi setup as described as "Fiat TWIN CAM 120 IE LE JETRONIC INJECTION" be suitable or be modified for use on a Montecarlo?
Any comments or any one who has done this or similar would be very welcome before I buy some more garage junk.
Thanks, Dave.

Re: Fiat ie set up suitability for Montecarlo
Hi Dave,
Good choice of car by the way! What are looking to achieve from your Monte? There are a myriad of options available to you with regard to engine options on your Monte. Adding FI to a Monte engine is certainly doable, but again, it depends on what you want from your car. There's nothing wrong with the carb setup as standard, and whilst DCNFs are getting more rare to find - particularly proper Monte manifolds, DCOEs are more readily available, but neither are a quick job to do properly.
You can add Beta ie injection to a Monte, but again, it's not simply a bolt on mod. It has been done before, mainly in the States with good results.
So the easy answer to your question is yes! But it begs a lot more questions! Feel free to ask away!
thank you
Darren

Re: Fiat ie set up suitability for Montecarlo
Hi,
Thanks for the reply, to begin with, I just want to be able to use the Monte without worrying whether I'm goging to get home!
I am currently having problems with setting up my DCNF's (see my other subject in Q&A's "poor progression & idle problems").
With the help of Guy & Others I am making progress, but I am just checking the options, hopefully I can get the DCNF's working well, I just love the noise they make.
I also have a Mk1 Escort which I have fitted a Pinto 20i from a late Sierra, and has made the car reliable, reasonably economical, but still fun to drive. I was hoping I can do the same with the Monte.
thank you. Dave.

Re: Fiat ie set up suitability for Montecarlo
Hi Dave,
There's no reason why you can't have a perfectly reliable Monte on DCNFs, once you have them set up properly. Assume that the manifold is a correct Montecarlo item? I see that the problems really started when you changed the head - why not put the original one back on again? Did the an internet auction site one come with cams? It could well be that the 'ported/flowed' head you have is performing worse than the standard one.
With the standard head and cams, you have a baseline you can start with from which to start setting up the carbs.
I know several folks in the Montecarlo Consortium with DCNFs fitted, who have no reliability issues. Keep providing information/data and we will solve the problem.
Presumably the carbs came from another Monte? Are they a recent purchase?
thank you
Darren

Re: Fiat ie set up suitability for Montecarlo
Hi Darren,
The head, manifold & carbs all came together and was (so I was told) used in a race car.
I am using the standard Monte Cams. As for the manifold being the correct Monte one, I don't know for sure, it does say Alquatti on it?
I am considering putting the prev head back on, but will try to get this head working first, if no go then so be it.
It is idling well now, but I am hoping for some fine weather so I can take it for a test drive.
Will keep you posted.

Hi Dave
Does the manifold say 'MC' on it or 'Beta' at all? Fingers crossed on the weather - If you're in the area, there is the AutoItalia show at Brooklands on Saturday. I'll be there, as will a number of other Montes and their owners.
thank you

Re: Fiat ie set up suitability for Montecarlo
An LE Jetronic isn't the most sophisticated setup ever produced. If you're going to go electronic, it should be a real improvement over carbs, in my opinion. Just putting on a compromise because your carbs aren't doing well is not something I'd personally do. Either get the carbs set up right or put on "proper" digital stuff. Cost wise, taking your car to a specialist to get it set up proper with the carbs you have now, will be cheaper than the mere purchase of the proper parts for a decent digital setup. Getting the ignition setup done will probably cost you the same or more than getting your carbs fixed and set up, so I don't really see a reason to go injection, unless you really want it for it's own sake. Just hang in there, get your carb problems sorted and enjoy the victory once you're there.

Re: Fiat ie set up suitability for Montecarlo
Hello,
When I bought my Montecarlo it was equiped with a Fiat Argenta i.e engine. The L jetronics injection was working well.
(Since I replaced the system by a multi throttle FI based on a 130TC head/engine)

Re: Fiat ie set up suitability for Montecarlo
Thanks everyone for your comments,
Have made some progress with the carbs, so boyd by this and your advice I will continue with the carbs, I do love the noise.
The Sun finally come out the day before, so I took it for a gentle test drive around the block, much much better thanks to all the help & advice from Guy other forum members.
I must say this is a very good forum, very helpfull, and lots of members that actually know what they are on about. Smashing.
Thanks folks,
Hopefully more Sun will follow, and just maybe we will have a decent summer this year.
Dave.
