Race Report LMA Eurosaloons Silverstone August 2008
First race in the LMA this year for me a double header 2 races over 2 days with seperate qualifying. Prior to this I raced a Dunlop motorsport news round again at the Silvertone national, more of a shake-down come baptism of fire for the newly rebuilt car including its new Guy Croft race engine and new electrics, oh and bacci race box. I found from the DMN race that the box was not shifting correct thus it had to be rebuilts by my friend and Fiat-Lancia specialist Neil Smith owner of NJS autos in Pershore Worcestershire. New gear hubs and a shortened gear lever sharpened up the change massively.
I then carried out a trackday at Silverstone GP circuit - this was fantastic practice nad the first time I really gave the car hell, I went out with an instructor which was the best £30 I ever spent on the car.
Come the LMA race I felt more ready then ever. Saturday morning came looking rather cloudy, the weather was just holding and much debate occurred in the padock what tyres to run. Some chose to leave for the assembly area late as possible for qualifying. The rest of us went fingers crossed wearing slicks - if only we had gone out 15 minutes prior, as we waited the heavens opened, off I went its was like the steering had broken no grip, people spinning off all over the place, on lap 2 entering the pit straight I was faced with a badly damaged BMW M3 of Angus Dawe - the session was red flagged and we all got back to the paddock as soon as possible not quite F1 but a very quick tyre change out we went again. A different story on full wets had me qualify ok.
Actuall race: Out we went no doubt as to the tyre choice full wets raining heavy. Rolling went round and my closest competition the Peugeot 306 of Jason Newman took his chance to get the drop on me on the stright only to be met by a fish tailing Sierra Costworth round copse corner - I had no hesitation in re-claiming my place taking out the Sierra at the same time. The race went well picking up 4 places in the process.

Sunday presented us with better weather back on went the slicks. I knew I would have to put in a better time then in DMN race to compete with my next closest rival Trevor Nicosia in the Renault clio cup. Jason Newman had bottom end failure meaning he was not in the running. Out we went for qualifying - clocking a time 1second faster then my previous best in the DMN race - excellent.
I qualified in front of the clio cup but Trevor let his experience show in the race taking his chance to push me tight out of Lydden and take me on the straight, I should have defended. However, this allowed what was the best race to date. The cars we evenly matched for speed 5 speed manual 2.0 16v versus 6 speed sequential, I could take Copse corner quicker and Brookland and Lydden, however the Clio could out brake the Tipo into Maggots and put the power down out of Lydden easier. Neck in Neck stuff, finally the clio succumbed to a brake failure leaving me to go round and finsih 3rd in class. Please see the video to see the action (posted with GC's permission)
