2.0 injection build for Triumph Spitfire

Post by UKM »

Hi there ,
If I might say firstly , I imagine many people would love to see this forum return to more life .
There must still be many thousands of Fiat/Lancia twin cam owners out there .
Sharing is of great value to many people .
Yes , most topics have been fairly well covered within the forum but there will always be those re-engaging with their projects , others with new ideas/vehicles/products and of course continuous fresh owners needing friendly support/guidance . So do start posting again please .

OK , I am still slowly ( and blindly ) pushing towards my 2.0 injection engine build , finances providing of course .
It is a great shame it’s progress will not benefit from GC’s experience in person but with combined guidance/help from others it will hopefully come together .

I am no engine builder myself , just a motor dreamer but I do have some experience with design/engineering having been involved in amateur patent design for products relating mainly to my work in home maintenance including plumbing/appliances/household fittings/door locks etc ( sadly no royalties made to date though ;-) ) but I can slowly learn with good teaching . I am well aware that there is far too much motor tech out there to learn it all but every little bit helps .

The only MAIN component hopefully still missing for the build is race rods . I have though spoken via texts with Gloria ( Hi Gloria ) regarding supply although I have since realised though that I failed to confirm if these are supplied with bolts ? ARP ? I will try and call tomorrow . There are a few other items Gloria might also be able to supply but before confirming these with her I will first need some guidance .
I will trawl through the parts available and parts owned shortly and post relevant questions as they come to me ; your suggestions will be gratefully received indeed .

In brief , I am hoping , money permitting , that Lain at SMD in Sittingbourne will have time next month to take an initial look at building up a short block for this engine . With no success so far in finding a good standard size 2.0 crank , I am now considering using one of my two new short blocks for the 2.0 injection build and one to replace the block on the rebuilt 130tc engine which has the reground crank .

These two short blocks I purchased came from two separate sources but interestingly have the same block number , 132 DB 2AO - 4356114
However the additional codes are different , block 1 ) 132 D1 000 1452826 block 2 ) 124 R14 1440030 .
Let’s hope Lain decides they are both sound .

As some of you will know , Steven ( WAL ) and his father , came down to pick up my GC VX 1585 engine . This I believe is intended for Steven’s fathers new Mogi van build which I am sure you will soon be seeing on here .
Very good to meet them and I hope they will be happy with the purchase . Thank you both .

I have retained the dry sump and Titan pump and bracket GC supplied with the 1585 engine and this sump initially seems to clear the 2.0 new short block crank . As well as the obvious advantages I need the dry sump system as the it’s design gives clearance on my Spitfires suspension turret and front cross member .

Current thinking ;
if all checks out I am looking to use one of the new 2.0 short blocks with ; oil way mods , ancillary shaft mods , RWD mods if required , tri-metal bearings , forged HC pistons , race rods , race weight flywheel , all fully balanced .
Electric Davies Craig water pump and digital fan controller unit , swirl pot , Caterham race radiator , race 95 amp alternator , lightweight starter , Accusump , Allison’s billet aluminium crank pulley .

The block will be topped with the fully worked delta big valve 47/38 reverse port head I purchased ( inlet 8mm exhaust 7mm ) with Isky double valve springs ( currently singles on exhaust ) , 1” belt on Allison’s adjustable cam wheels , Allison’s header , ATR throttle bodies on a Webcon manifold , pipercross sock filters , cool air supply , Omex 600 , mainly Sytec fuel supply , twin aluminium tanks with twin red top pumps .
This is linked via a GC adapter and Tilton twin cerametallic hydraulic clutch to a TranX ally Ford type 9 race box leading to a Subaru/Kazz/AP suretrac diff .

Sorry if the COVID vodka has left this a little B grade :-)

If allowed I will post a link to my Flickr album ?

Thank you , Matt SE London

Good morning all ,

https://flic.kr/ps/3TSFa3

Here is the link to my Flicker account .
Only progress since the last post is further accumulation of various parts as seen via the link and a little further learning .
Hopefully there will be some actual physical progress before long :-)
Looking forward to viewing others projects .

Sadly Gloria confirmed Cunningham are no longer in business so it was lucky I picked up these Arrow rods just in case .

Hi ,
In the search for a standard 2.0 crank I purchased a barn find Beta engine and box today but it turns out to be a 1585 so no good for me . Turns over freely so should be a good base for a rebuild for someone . If I decide to sell it on soon I shall list it here and on Betaboys .

This project should turn out to be quite a ride.
What's the weight of a spitfire, cannot be much more than a few hundred kilo's surely?
Absolutely love the Arrow rods, I bought a set for my vw golf mk1 turbo many years ago ( cars still not finished) and theyre a lovely item indeed, very well made.
Very expensive even back then in 1998, cost in the region of £1000 for the four but you just know theyll never break whatever you throw at them and theyre made in England too so have provenance unlike the stuff that comes from China.
Have you any pictures of the car you can post?

I agree about site activity also, it has been so very quiet, Im sure Guy would not have wanted it that way, Im guilty of not posting as much as I should but I simply havent had a lot to say really.
Hopefully my own project car mis-adventures will yield enough events to be able to write more soon, I have got plenty to do on them if Im honest.

Hi Tony ,
I purchased the project from a talented forum member a very long time ago .
It should be nice and light being fully stripped with fibreglass bonnet , doors , boot lid and targa top also Caterham race radiator , Kirky seats , polycarbonate rear windows , billet ally wheels and ally tanks .
There is a link above to Flickr account .
I just need to sell an engine or two to start putting it all together . I am no engine builder myself but hopefully have a decent enough selection of parts that will either fit together well or perhaps the odd further part might need purchasing .
Time will tell .

Hi to all ,

Some progress to report ,
CCK down in Sussex are now making progress with this 2.0 injection build .
OE new block is looking good , Arrow rods , Ross pistons , Tri metal bearings , GC/Titan dry sump , race fly wheel , Tilton clutch all fully balanced .
The head I purchased from an internet auction site although well ported , CCK concluded a mismatch between the valve grooves and retainers and also valve tops slightly overground . They have now ordered new 47mm BMW inlet valves and new 38mm Ford V6 exhaust valves which they will marry up properly with the Isky valve springs and retainers .
Looking forward to seeing it all together , then up to Northampton Motor Sport . I will post as things progress .
CCK also have my second new block and this will be used to rebuild the ‘ rebuilt ‘ 130tc Strada engine I purchased with the re ground 2.0 crank . Several bits I have left over will be used on this build including higher compression new pistons , adjustable cam wheels , 1” belt , new lightweight flywheel etc . I will be looking to sell this on if anyone is interested ?

Matt,
nice to see progress on the build and the pictures look good.

Though 47mm inlet valves sound just a bit too large to fit in a Fiat head.

Keep us posted on progress.

Steven

Hi Steven ,
Hope you are making some progress yourself .
CCK seem Ok with head mods but you might get proved right yet .
I have just had to purchase a tensioner bracket from Middle Barton Garage as I am reluctant to remove one from either of the two complete engines in my garage and was shocked to find no one seemed to be able to provide one including an internet auction site .

I was just about to purchase a Volumex drive wheel but seems there is the option of ? 20/21 teeth ? , which size is most likely to be in demand please ? M

Matt,
unfortunately, other than my recent post on the RR session for the Morris my progress is limited as I'm struggling for space at the moment. Too many cars and not the right time to get rid of the one I plan to sell.

But good to see your project is moving forwards.

If I remember correctly the standard road going Volumex used a 21 or 22 tooth wheel. Mine has 22 teeth.

Regards,
Steven

engine a few weeks ago .
I am now in need of selling my rebuilt 130TC Strada engine to raise the money to take it up to Northampton Motor Sport for Omex set up , run in and dyno .
The 130TC is on an internet auction site and the sale includes a brand new 2.0 block and crank , HC pistons and a manifold for twin DCOEs .
I also have various other Twin cam bits for sale on there including a 1600 Beta engine and box .
Get buying please !
Thanks , Matt .
