Hello Tommi:

Nice to see a fellow Lada owner in here. I will be posting pictures of a couple performance parts I had someone turn up/mill for my Niva's engine rebuild project tomorrow, it's almost 2 AM here and I'm thinking more about going to bed rather than going over a couple hundred jpeg files.

thank you,

MODEL POST!

Well done indeed Urbancamo, nicely illustrated (good technical stuff) and well captioned with excellent accompanying text.
Nothing wrong with Ladas, the entire communist world incl Cuba depended on them and as is well-known I did a 2 liter TC conversion for BBC Top Gear some years back - fantastic setup that 'slots' straight in (of course).

hi Tommi

Nice project, good to see you build a car like this and use the original Lada engine in it too.

I've been wondering when the first case would show up here of someone fitting a Torsen-type LSD to a 124 rear axle. Personally I've only known about them for about a year, they seem to have been developed for the Niva and luckily for us that means it will fit older RWD Fiats too. But either there are not many people who want an LSD in a Fiat, or there is not much communication between race/rally minded people and the 4x4 guys.

As this is straight 'bolt on', It certainly looks like an easier conversion than machining a BMW diff to fit or trying to find an original '70's Fiat item. And these are all plate type LSD's while I think the Torsens are a newer generation.
No idea really about their build quality and if they are fit for competition use. I believe there are at least two brands of these, but maybe it's the same part in another box?
If (or rather: when) I follow your route, it will be for street use only, and the occasional week in the mountains. Not regular track duty for sure.

Please tell us some more about your experiences with this one.
Maybe some other member who converted to LSD can add his?

regards
Tom
(oh dear, we'll be having a discussion between Tommi, Thomas and Tom next.... ;-) )

From what I understand, Torsens have one big disadvantage, landing. Flying the car is fine, but when it touches the ground again, the diff has a reputation to shatter. I know they didn't put Torsens on the rally Deltas, probably because of this?

Superb

- by a member who clearly knows exactly what he's doing and has the in-car results to prove it and is willing to share it in a readable and well-illustrated way - which is all rare these days. And I also know very well how much longer it takes to do the job when you have photograph it as-you-go.

I've learned more about diffs in ten minutes than I ever knew!

Are you tapping the bearing housing on top with the hammer, or what is the exact procedure? Is it just light tapping all over to make certain it "sets"?

Very nice post and great work/pictures. Congrats.

The Lada 2105 is relatively affordable here in Uruguay, a couple for sale now, one is 1994 2105.

Great second car to dissemble and follow your work as an example. That block is immaculate.

Is this a car that could be driven daily without reliability issues once rebuilt?

I want to keep my Alfa 33 as a weekend drive and get a daily drive for my wife!!

Thank you very much for all the information and details. I will certainly use this when building my own car.

best regards
Tom

If Guy approves, could you please point out the website you are referring to? I'm ready for a 30 hour training on diffs.
