Roll center

Post by zdrafko51 »

Hello,
did anyone ever try to measure roll center of a car and try to lover or rise it.

I am considering to make my in the front at about 150 mm and rear around 300 mm, my center of gravity is around 500 mm, of coarse at the front CG is a bit lover and rear is a bit higher. Will my car benefit of higher roll center?

Thank you!

Hello
So far as yet, no i haven't, but i have designed a watts linkage setup for my Capri which will allow me to adjust the roll centre.
The front suspension setup i have already completed with adjustable tie rods and should also give me some adjustment, but we will see.

Yes raising the roll centre up front could help, but it really does depend on the geometry of the setup and anti roll setup you have

Hello,

Did you design a new Watts toggle for the Atlas ?

Indeed, but so far haven't got it fabricated to know 100%
I bought an alloy watts housing from a works escort, but the mounting shaft on the back of the housing is being removed as my watts linkage will have the arms fixed to the axle and the centre of the watts fixed to the chassis. So reverse of what is typically found on old Rally Escorts where they mount the watts linkage centre to the diff cover.

Hello Will01,
Sorry for the late reply.
May be I didn’t understand you. In the Escort Atlas axle, none of the bar’s ends are hard fixed to anywhere. In the alloy diff cover, there is the toggle link which the bars connected via rose joints and at the chassis tower ends there is the bush and the bolt in the watts towers.
If I understand correct, you will have 1 toggle on the right 1 toggle on the left chassis legs but no toggle in the diff cover.
Would be great to see your design once completed or even in drawing.

Will have to get something sorted soon, last few months I have been building a garage to re-house the project, so I hope this winter I can get back to working on her and getting it running. Adjustable roll centre watts linkage still on the cards, I have the materials bought in already.
