Superfinishing process

Hi Guys/chaps

Just got a general question really - I've seen an increasing amount of people resorting to superfinishing various engine and drivetrain components in the last few years, but I know nothing about it other than what I've found on wikipedia.

Is it the sort of thing that a fast road/competition car enthusiast should think about using? I haven't seen any suppliers (i.e. camshafts) that offer off the shelf products that are already superfinished. If it was so good then you'd have thought they would do it in house.

Your would be welcome. I'm not thinking of actually using it, I'd just like to understand where it fits within practical use and how widely used it is. Every days a school day and all that.

I am a convert to this process. I was introduced to it a few years ago by the formula one boys. The firm i used specialises in specialist coatings and surface treatments, largely for motorsport and are based near Northampton. I can give you their name if Guy has no objection.

Basically the treatment involves putting components into a machine which also has a continuous spray of fine polishing grit. the effect is to round off any machining marks and (as a side effect) polish the surfaces. Dimension changes are minimal (microns) so it is also good for bearing surfaces.

I have tried it on some gear sets, and also a new Crown wheel and pinion set. Apart from making the bits shiny, there was a noticeable reduction in gear whine when using the treated parts (and whine means heat generation!).

A recent gearbox strip down showed less wear on components and cleaner oil than i was expecting - always a good thing!

If it makes a gear cluster last one more season, then that has to be a bargain!
