Ford gearbox in a Fiat TC

Post by vcg »

Hi Guy,

Surfing your increadible source of info site, I stepped into the picture of the ford gearbox mated to the 131 bellhousing you did some time ago. I still have a Ford type 9 tran-x 5 speed gearbox I kept from a MK1 that I sold ages ago. Could I use this gearbox in my 124 spider or in my 131 Racing? Will it fit? If yes can you supply me the adaptor plate for either 124 or 131 bellhousing?

Thanks,
Vassilis

I have done that in my car and I used Lada bellhousing with Lada flywheel and hydraulic clutch. The bellhousing has thestarter motor on the inlet side of thema 16v head. The adaptor plate I made from old ford bellhousing in about 1 day. You can make the gearbox to be unbolted from the bellhousing from outside so that you can later take it off in about 10 minutes.

Vassilis,
don't know if it has any bearing on your particular requirements, but for information there are slight differences in the Ford type 9 gearboxes. The input shaft length varied depending whether it was a standard, diesel or heavy duty type, this is a bit generalized but will do for these purposes:

The standard 1.6, 1.8 and 2.0 models had a short input shaft about 6.9 inches from the front face of the gearbox.

The 2.8, 2.9 and V6 models had a long input shaft about 8.1 inches from the front gearbox face. These also had a long front cover and mostly (not all) heavier duty bearings.

The diesel gearboxes also had a long input shaft (8.1 inches) but with a short front cover.

There were other differences and some variations to this but it a pretty good guide.

The 1.6, 1.8 and 2.0 boxes were good up to about 140 – 150 bhp. The longer input shaft type will take higher bhp.

Regards,
Steven

Thanks Steve

My adaptor was made for the Ford Capri (2 liter Pinto) 5 speed.

TranX and Quaife do race gearsets, we ran both in similar boxes at 200bhp/9500rpm, just for the record..

I will check with the shaft length to see how it works with clutch bellhousing etc. I am pretty sure this tran-x box is strong enough for my Fiats as it was on my MK1 monster. Guy I quess you can workout any adaptor plate thickness?
