130TC abarth motor upgrade for 131abarth replica

Post by Baxter »

Hello Guy,

My name is Jim Baxter from Belgium.
I'am already 3 till 4 years a member bud this is my first big problem. My project is a 131 abarth france replica.
The Shell is almost done...so now it is time for the motor.
So i have a 130TC abarth motor to put in the 131...
The motor is compleet with carbs and ignition.
What is the best upset for upgrading the motor.
I want to put higher dome pistons, prep the cylinderhead bud the carburators everybody is telling me various things...so what is the best setup...leave the original on it, or i have intake manifold 125 BC (124 spider) with IDF 40 or 44 Webers, solex 40 or delorto????
What do you suggest for the best upgrade of the 130TC Abarth motor...

Thank you all ready and i hope you can help me

thank you Baxter

Sorry for keeping you waiting Jim,

can I see a photo of the engine please?

If I understand correctly you want to fit a 130TC unit into a 131?

Do you propose any kind of overhaul work?

Be aware:

1. Sump and oil pump is wrong for RWD
2. End drive distributor will not fit in the 131
3. 130TC Crank will need a special bearing in the end to support the gearbox input shaft and the shaft will have to be shortened several mm

There are other things too, we can talk about them

It's hard for me to advise on this because all the things I recommend would be GC raceparts and I think the cost will not interest you.

If I were doing this engine I would strip the 130TC completely and the 131/132 spare too. If the non-130TC crank is in superb condition I would use that because you're going to have problems using the 130TC crank in RWD setup. However to re-use a good crank requires careful prep, all described in all the books I have written 1996 (reprint for sale on an internet auction site), 2010, 2013

The rods and valves, springs, pistons - I would junk. I never use cast pistons anymore, only GC.JE forged designs, same goes with the rods.

The 130TC had 3D mapped ignition with a distributor on the cambox end and even if that system was any use with a non-standard engine it won't fit the car so best use the 131 camboxes.

Ignition systems that will fit the unit - very limited choice. Now and again a new OE 124 distributor comes up for sale - driven off the top of the ex cambox. I can supply GC cams with the drive gear for that but finding a cambox with the port for the top-mounted distributor is not easy.

Carbs - well, if the car is left-hand drive the brake booster gets in the way of sidedraft carbs (for which I have a GC inlet manifold for 45 DCOE) so you are forced really to use the old 124 'waffle' downdraft inlet manifold but with that the distributor must be mounted on the ex cambox. I'm not going to get into distributorless ignition (that most of my engines use these days - with Omex system and trigger wheel). Not at this time anyway.

You'll need the sump from a 131/132 2 liter engine and an oil pump of that type too. I overhaul a lot of these, I am not saying just take the old one and bolt it to the new engine...

If going downdraft use 44 IDF from Webcon.

None of this stuff is easy to describe, in fact it takes hours, even for people who are GC clients.

Hello Guy,

Sorry for the late response but spent 12 days abroad for work.
Thank you very much for giving a detailed explanation about my question. It is not that simple apparently!

I also read in your explanation that you only work with your specific parts. What I fully understand for such an upgrade of the engine, and so much more reliable.

Also featured on your other website for possible prices for those specific parts but I don't find any prices or a guideline for the complete project of an engine.
Is there somewhere a list or book where I could see prices of your parts and possibly also prices if you would partially or completely convert the engine.

You also said that you had made a book of it (1996) that I could possibly buy on an auction internet site. I would like to buy this one, but I do not know which is the best site for that.
Or maybe you still have a copy that I can buy.

I made pictures of the other engines and parts that I have. You will certainly know what I can do with it or which parts I can use for the upgrade of my engine.

The engine that goes in the Fiat 131 is 75% for driving on the street and should not achieve super high speeds but may well accelerate.

I also found a loose cambox between my parts for the distributor to place on top. But the alu is slightly corroded, can it still be used after sandblasting or not? Attached photos.

I'm not going to be able to guide you on this the way you are presenting it, the scope is way too big for me to devote time to. Whether you agree or not the reality is you are asking me what to do. I cannot at this time.

You need to completely strip all your donor units, clean and inspect the parts you're going to use for a start. This means working out exactly what you're going to use and NOT. The priority is a good useable 2 liter crank, by far.

75% of the stuff shown would be scrapped at GCE if undertaking a rebuild.
